About This Hike

Maine is home to some of the finest waterfalls in New England that still remain far off the beaten path. Grand Falls is a prime specimen, and the challenge to visit this falls lies in the fact that no paved road goes anywhere near them. The wildly scenic Grand Falls is a classic example of a horseshoe or block-style falls. It is an imposing 40 feet tall and over 100 feet across. In strong conditions, the entire formation is a sheet of wild whitewater. In drier conditions, sections of the left side of the falls usually remain turbulent, while the right side features gentler horsetails of varying power. It is one of the most powerful and scenic undammed waterfalls in the Northeast. This hike makes for a perfect trek for beginners, kids and grandparents alike, but shouldn't be skipped by even the most experienced hiker. Nearly all of the hike is on wide, well maintained trails with little elevation change with a few alternate route options that provide short but slightly more challenging hiking. Hikers will meet at our base at 7am, shuttle to the trailhead which is about 15 miles down a remote dirt road to begin the 4-mile hike before returning to base between 11a-12pm Your professional and friendly guide will share unique and historical information and stories about the falls and the surrounding area. The falls are accessible year round (albeit via more challenging approach). In fact mid-winter offers an incredible spectacle of frozen cascades that should not be missed as the sheer size of the river is often keeps it from completely icing over. * Even on short hikes, it is important to stay hydrated - please remember to bring a water bottle! *
